Continue With Your Day in Spanish

If you want to say the word "day" in Spanish, you would say, "día" or "el día." Trying to say "date/day"? Then use "la fecha." Specifying a working day or day trip? Then use "la jornada." Learning Spanish nouns can seem intimidating, but the basics are actually pretty simple to get a handle on particularly if you already speak related languages like English, Italian, or French. Italian and French are historically related to Spanish in the same "romance language"/Latin family—while English uses many French and Italian/Latin words that we call cognates (lingual cousins of one another). This is why you will often find English terms like the word "flower" that sound remarkably similar in French (fleur), Italian (fiore), and Spanish (flor). Many learners also find that Spanish has an extremely easy to understand pronunciation system, as well as very few irregularities in pronunciation—unlike English. Additionally, the alphabet is an almost perfect match to English and other western European languages. There are only three additional letters you'll want to learn: ch (chay), ñ (eñe), and ll (elle).

With Rosetta Stone's immersive approach, you'll learn the language, not just the words. What makes Rosetta Stone unique is that we prepare you to use your new language in the real world. So it's not just about the features, but what you're able to do because of them. That way, you'll be ready to handle any situation and sound great as you're doing it.

Like anything worthwhile, there are few shortcuts, but if you combine individual practice in the Rosetta Stone award-winning mobile app and practice with other Spanish language learners in Live Tutoring, you can have absolute control over your learning speed and, ultimately, your long-term progress.

The basic conversational building blocks are a great place to start. Simple words and phrases like sorry, thank you, etc. simplify your entrance into daily conversation in most every language, including Spanish.

  • Hola = Hello
  • Adiós = Goodbye
  • Por favor = Please
  • Gracias =Thank You
  • Lo siento = Sorry
  • Salud = Bless you
  • Sí = Yes
  • No = No
  • ¿Quién? = Who?
  • ¿Qué? = What?
  • ¿Por qué? = Why?
  • ¿Dónde? Where?

As you may already know—or have just noticed—Spanish does have a few important differences in pronunciation that can make it a challenge for some learners, at least early on. As one example, the letter r is pronounced differently and takes some practice for most new learners. This distinct sound is formed by tapping the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth, about a third of the way back in the mouth. Some Spanish language experts suggest new Spanish learners practice making the "tt" sound, as it sounds in the English word butter.

Consistently improving your pronunciation means getting regular feedback and making corrections (even if a day at a time), practicing, and persevering in your education until your brain and tongue develop a feel for how to form the particular sounds that make up the Spanish language.Every Rosetta Stone lesson is powered by our patented TruAccent™ speech engine, which instantly compares your voice to native and non-native speakers for the most accurate pronunciation.
